What is the Best Age to Start Martial Arts?

What is the best age to start Martial Arts?

With all the benefits of Martial Arts, parents often wonder…What’s the best age to enroll their children into classes?

Believe it or not, young exposure is never a bad idea.  Four- and five-year old’s benefit greatly from martial arts classes.  They are not doing any too difficult or dangerous just yet.  At this age they are just learning the basics, along with disciple, respect and confidence. They are also learning skills like balance, hand-eye coordination and attention span.

If your child is not suited for team sports, it’s still a great way for them to get exercise and meet new friends.

Before all that, the best way to know if martial arts is right for your child is quite simple…ask them if they are interested.  If your child doesn’t quite know enough to answer that question, then take them to a local school and observe a class.  Most schools offer a free trial class to see if you child enjoys it.  Kids love doing what their peers are doing so going with a buddy is often a fun way to get started.  Most schools will also evaluate your child privately so they can tell you if your child is ready and which class would be the best fit for them.

All in all, kids can begin learning the very basics early on, but this can also depend on a child’s rate of development.

If you’d like to schedule a free trial class with United States Taekwondo, visit us online at BudaKarate.com, shoot us an email, or call us at 737-999-4004.

Martial Arts and Children’s Behavior

Martial Arts and Children’s Behavior

Activities like Martial Arts are a fun way for both boys and girls to achieve fitness and focus. Some parents may think they also promote violence, but that’s a myth, according to experts. The martial arts actually help teach a variety of skills like self-discipline, socialization, self-respect, self-control, self-defense, self esteem, focus, confidence, and courtesy.. In fact, many parents whose children have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) report great success with these programs because self-control and concentration are exactly the skills underdeveloped in ADHD kids.

A typical class is about 45 minutes long.  It begins and ends with a bow to the teacher, or master. After a warm-up, students practice the martial art’s skills, which may include kicks, punches and blocks. Each requires concentration and strict attention when practicing.

Progress is marked by the belt system, which takes you from beginner white belt through a variety of colors until you reach black belt. Opportunities to test for the next level generally come every two months. This gives kids a wonderful opportunity to set and achieve goals!

Experts say that it’s the respect kids learn, whether from bowing or standing still and waiting for the next command, that can be the most important benefit. Kids who have respect for themselves and for others make better decisions and experience more success.

These benefits often carry over into school, helping to improve behavior and even grades, according to recent research.

Are Your Kids Driving You Crazy?

School is out for the foreseeable future. Everything entertaining is closed. You’re likely at your wits end trying to figure out what to do with your kids. Do you force them to study? Let them watch TV or play video games all day? Try to teach them something yourself? Tie them up so you can get some work done? It’s a recipe for frustration! Virtual martial arts classes could be your answer!

While many businesses are closed due to the campaign to slow the spread of the coronavirus, at United States Taekwondo we are working harder than ever! We have shifted our karate and personal development program online, where we are offering live group classes in our virtual classroom. Our virtual classes offer students the opportunity to be in a group class with other kids from the comfort and safety of their own homes. Unlike learning strictly through video, our live virtual classes allow personal feedback from our instructors and real human interaction. (It’ll also get them out of you hair for a bit!)

Our students are already taking advantage of our virtual class platform, enabling them to continue progressing even while “flattening the curve.” If you’re looking for something positive and enriching for your kids, our karate for kids program is the answer!

Imagine Your Kid With More Confidence!

Imagine Your Kid With More Confidence!

Actually, if your kid is already training with us at United States Taekwondo in Buda, Texas, you are most likely already witnessing it first hand. Confidence building is woven into the very fabric of our karate program!

How does it work?

It begins from the moment a student sets foot onto our training floor for the first time. The learning starts immediately, as does the first taste of success. Students learn their first few basic karate techniques and memorize our Student Creed to earn their first belt: the White Belt. This early “victory” sets the stage for bigger wins in the future. There is something really special about seeing the belt tied onto a student’s waist for the first time.

The United States Taekwondo Belt System

At our school, we learn goal setting through a series of short and long term goals. Our martial arts students earn “stripes” on their belts by learning different pieces of our curriculum. Earning stripes motivates the students to work hard and also lets them know where they stand in relation to the requirements for their rank in our system.

In addition to these “physical” stripes, students also earn what we refer to as “home”stripes. Home stripes are earned by demonstrating respect, responsibility, and effort at home and at school. These stripes are differentiated and individualized for each student, and reflect our philosophy of constant improvement.

If you’re a current student at our school, keep up the great work, and if you haven’t joined our team yet, visit us online at BudaKarate.com, shoot us an email, or call us at 737-999-4004.
